Pre-Operation Instructions

For IV Sedation

You will NOT be able to drive to and from the office. Furthermore, you should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience. Your ride must be present with you at the time of the procedure and be available immediately afterwards.

The medication has a very strong amnestic effect and frequently, you do not remember going home; thus taking a cab or bus is NOT permitted.

Clothing

Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Shirts should have short sleeves that are not too tight or loose fitting sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow, as monitoring equipment will need to be applied.

If you wear contacts, dentures, or any jewelry, especially on your lips and tongue, please remove them prior to surgery. They can potentially damage your teeth during surgery while you are asleep.

If you have an illness such as a cold, active cough, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset within 48 hours of the surgery date, please notify the office.

For Sinus Surgery

Please take Sudafed 1 hour before Sinus Lift Procedure. Decongestants such as Sudafed (over the counter) must be taken 2-‐3 times same day of surgery and maybe 2-‐3 days after. It is required to NOT blow your nose mouth and when you cough or sneeze – open your mouth.

If oral Valium is used then you should not eat solid food two hours before the appointment. It is important to eat on the ay of surgery, but the meal before surgery must be skipped. For example, if surgery is scheduled for the afternoon, eat a good breakfast but skip lunch. It is permissible to have some clear liquids such as juice 3 hours before the appointment. Take Valium as prescribed 1 hour prior to surgery.

Alcohol

Do not use alcoholic beverages 24 hours before the day of treatment or prior to your appointment.

Aspirin

We prefer that you do not take aspirin one week prior to surgery and one week after surgery, unless advised by your medical doctor.

Nutrition

During the first 24 hours following your surgery, avoid hot fluids (tea, coffee, hot soup) and also avoid chewing on food on the same side of the surgery.

Limit yourself to a soft diet such as:

Pudding, Jell‐O, yogurt, applesauce, scrambled eggs, mashed bananas, cooked pasta, Liquid supplements: Ensure, Boost, Carnation Instant Breakfast

Increase your nutrition gradually but avoid hard to chew foods until your first post-‐operative visit. Drink plenty of fluids and do not use straws.

Smoking

Smoking seriously retards the healing process and increases the risk of infection in your mouth. Avoid smoking during the first 48 hours following your surgery, preferably 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after.

Reduce smoking as much as possible to ensure proper healing and avoid excess bleeding.

Activities

During the 5 days following your surgery, it is not advisable to exercise. Do not perform any strenuous physical activities during your recovery period.

If you take other routine medications please follow these directions:

High Blood Pressure

All medications for your blood pressure should be taken at their regular scheduled time and dose.

Asthma

All regularly scheduled asthma medications should be taken. If you have a rescue inhaler you will need to take two puffs prior to the procedure. Please bring your inhaler to the surgery.

Antibiotic Premedication

If you have been given premedication for your heart or artificial joints, please take them one hour prior to the surgery.

Maximum effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotics occurs when the antibiotic is in the tissue before bacterial invasion.
