Cosmetic (esthetics) Surgery

Soft (gum) and Hard (bone) tissues contouring are some of the cosmetic procedures that are designed to correct unacceptable smiles and improving esthetics such as:
  • Gummy smile
  • Uneven gum line
  • Long teeth
  • Exposed roots
  • Receding gums
  • Indentation in gums or jaw
  • Gum whitening

Crown Lengthening
This procedure can be done for gummy smiles, uneven gum line and to lengthen a tooth for a crown when tooth is decayed bellowed gum or the tooth is cracked below the gum line.

If your teeth look too short and your smile is too gummy or your gums cover too much of some teeth while leaving the others the right length, crown lengthening might be the solution. During this procedure, excess gum tissue is removed to expose more of the crown of the tooth. Your gum line is then sculpted.

When getting a Crown, the General Dentist must prepare your tooth to receive the Crown. Sometimes there is not enough tooth surface above the gumline to accomplish this. A Periodontist can do crown lengthening to provide more tooth surface. This ensures a more stable Crown with less gum irritation.

Ridge Augmentation
Tooth loss can cause an indentation in the gums and jawbone where the tooth used to be. This happens because the jawbone recedes when it no longer is holding a tooth in place. Not only is this indention unnatural looking, it also causes the replacement tooth to look too long compared to the adjacent teeth. Ridge augmentation can fill in this defect recapturing the natural contour of the gums and jaw. A hard and / or soft tissue procedure can be done to rebuild the jaw bone, a soft tissue ridge augmentation can be done to rebuild the contour and appearance of the gum. A hard tissue augmentation creates the bone necessary to support a dental implants, and both hard and soft tissue procedures create a natural looking soft tissue contour where teeth are missing.

Tissue Grafting
In some cases, receding gums cause the tooth root to become exposed, which makes your teeth look long and unsightly. Periodontal disease is sometimes the culprit behind long teeth and exposed roots. Soft tissue grafts and other root coverage procedures are designed to cover exposed roots, to reduce further gum recession and to protect vulnerable roots from decay.Four different types of gum tissue grafts are typically performed, your periodontist will decide which graft is best for you depending on your specific needs. The graft procedures include:
  • Connective-tissue grafts: This is the most common method used to treat root exposure. During the procedure, a flap of skin is cut at the roof of your mouth (palate) and tissue from under the flap, called subepithelial connective tissue, is removed and then stitched to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root. After the connective tissue -- the graft -- has been removed from under the palatal flap, the flap is stitched back down.
  • Free gingival grafts: Similar to a connective-tissue graft, free gingival grafts involve the use of tissue from the roof of the mouth. But instead of making a flap and removing tissue under the top layer of flesh, a small amount of tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth and then attached to the gum area being treated. This method is used most often in people who have thin gums to begin with and need additional tissue to enlarge the gums.
  • Pedicle grafts: In this procedure, instead of taking tissue from the palate, it is grafted from gum around or near the tooth needing repair. The flap, called a pedicle, is only partially cut away so that one edge remains attached. The gum is then pulled over or down to cover the exposed root and sewn into place. This procedure can only be done in people who have plenty of gum tissue near the tooth.
  • Allograft: This graft is an alternative material used for soft tissue grafting. Allograft is an acellular dermal matrix material that provides a scaffold on which the body can incorporate new blood vessels and grow new soft tissue cells. Allograft surgery eliminates the need for surgery on the roof of the mouth which reduces post-operative discomfort and gives your periodontist the ability to do mutiple grafts at the same time.

Gum Whitening
While the normal color of gingival (gum) tissue is pink, excess deposits of melanin can create the appearance of brown or black spots or patches on the gums. Known as melanin hyper-pigmentation, "dark gums" can affect individuals with cultural factors and pigmentation imbalances, and can range from covering small spots on the gums to nearly the entire area. While harmless, many people find these spots aesthetically undesirable. Deka Lazer technology is an accurate, quick way to eliminate dark gums in as little as one visit and with very short healing time.
